🍔 Healthy Homemade Burgers

Who says burgers can’t be healthy? These homemade burgers are made with extra-lean minced beef, simple ingredients, and plenty of flavour. They’re really easy to make too! (The images were taken before we each added our favourite toppings, in a delicious fresh bun).

Perfect for the barbecue on a lovely day, but don’t worry if the weather isn’t cooperating — you can cook them in a pan indoors too!

Ingredients

  • 1 kg extra-lean minced beef
  • 1 tsp dried mustard
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp chopped onion OR 1 tsp ground onion
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives OR 1 tsp ground chives
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg, for binding

You can use either onion or chives, depending on what you have available — or why not experiment with both?

Method

  1. Place all of the ingredients into a large bowl and mix together thoroughly, making sure everything is evenly combined.
  2. Depending on the size of burgers you want, this mixture should make approximately 9 half-pound burgers.
  3. To make evenly sized burgers, take a ½-cup measuring cup and fill it to the top with the minced beef mixture. Pat it down firmly and level the top.
  4. Empty the mixture onto a wooden cutting board and gently shape and pat it into a burger shape.
  5. Repeat until you have used all of the mixture. Put into fridge until it’s time to cook them.

🔥 Time to cook!

These burgers are wonderful cooked on the barbecue, especially when you’re enjoying a lovely summer day.

Place the burgers on the barbecue and sear both sides. Once cooked through, you can add your favourite toppings.

Why not add a little barbecue sauce, cheese, or both? It’s entirely up to you!

If you don’t have a barbecue, you can cook the burgers in a pan indoors — they’ll still be delicious.

A little tip from me…

Making your own burgers means you know exactly what’s going into them, and you can adjust the flavours to suit your own taste.

Try adding different herbs and spices, or experiment with your favourite toppings. That’s the fun of making your own!

Enjoy! 🍔
